Introduction

Welcome to Recorder Grade 1.  This course will cover all the theory and practical requirements for the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College syllabuses for Grade 1.
This course will combine both the practical and theory requirements to achieve the grade 1 standard.
Each lesson will contain audio samples for you to play along with.

Some lessons will have supplimentary attachments such as worksheets or links to videos demonstrating various concepts.
All lessons will have an accompanying quiz to help reinforce what you have learnt in that lesson.

Interspersed through the course will be sets of playalong tunes with accompaniment.
Each playalong set will use the notes you have learnt up to that point in the course.
The accompaniments will aid in developing various musicianship skills.

You can return to any lesson, quiz or playalong set as often as you wish.

Fingering Diagrams

The fingerings for notes will be shown in fingering diagrams as shown below.

Each diagram shows the notes that the fingering produces on both F and C instruments.
An F instrument is a recorder which has the lowest note F.  This usually refers to the treble recorder (also called the alto), although there are F recorders of various sizes.

A C instrument is a recorder which has the lowest note C.
This usually refers to the descant recorder (also called a soprano), and tenor recorder.  There are also other sizes of C recorders.

As you can see in the following diagram, all fingers down produces an F on an alto / treble recorder, and a C on a descant and tenor recorder.

This course is for learning the treble or descant or tenor recorders only.  It does not apply to the bass recorder.

The fingerings shown are for standard baroque-style instruments and will not cover earlier renaissance-style instruments.

There will be supplimentary videos throught the course.  It is advisable to watch each video for more explanation and demonstration by a tutor.
